Your trust matters to us
How we protect what you share with us, in counseling and on this website.
Confidentiality in counseling
What you share in counseling stays confidential. We do not discuss your sessions with anyone without your written permission, except in the situations described below.
There are a few exceptions, which are common to all counseling:
- If there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or to someone else
- If we suspect abuse or neglect of a child, an elderly person, or a vulnerable adult
- If we are required to share information by law, such as by a court order
If one of these situations comes up, we will share only what is necessary, and whenever possible we will talk with you about it first.
Consultation and supervision
To give you the best possible care, our counselors may occasionally consult with a supervisor or with trusted peer counselors about a counseling situation. When they do, they share only what is needed, leave out your name and other identifying details whenever possible, and those they consult are expected to keep the information confidential.
In crisis or thinking about harming yourself? We are not an emergency service. Please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911 right away.
